Dream Doodles
When I first started my inward work, I knew I wanted to take a closer look at my dreams. Our dreams are a window into the world within us. They have the ability to heal, shed light on and communicate some deeper truths. Admittedly so, I was thrilled and slightly terrified to add this practice to my daily work. However, once I did, a lot of truths were exposed and I was able to start healing those places.
Looking for an example? Two HUGE themes for me centered around CONTROL and VALIDATION. Whenever I have an airplane, car or train dream I know I need to look at where I might be out of control in my waking life. When I dream of being on stage (most often in my high school auditorium) I know I’m wrestling with feelings of validation and being “seen.” One step further~ Who does the validating? You! Self-Love and self-validation is the number one rule of thumb.
If you’re interested, definitely give it a try. I recommend Doris Cohen’s Dreaming On Both Sides of the Brain. Her process for dream analysis is easy.
1. Title your dream like a movie, book or newspaper article (don’t overthink.. just do! I have some examples below.)
2. Write it down without too much fret or fuss…like you’re talking to a martian. Clear and Concise. I like to record the colors and symbols that show up as well.
3. Repeat it a few times out loud or in your brain. Sometimes my dreams hangout with me during the day until I have the “ah-ha.”
4. Name the over-arching themes
5. Consider where these themes show up in your waking life and pay closer attention to those parts of you (by simply saying “hello” to those parts, you are starting the process of healing)
